COVA Framework

In research from Harapnuik (2018), "COVA - is a learner-centered active learning approach that gives the learner choice (C), ownership (O), and voice (V) through authentic (A) learning opportunities". The COVA learning approach has impacted my learning primarily through the DLL program. It was quite a transition from my previous Ed Tech courses to the DLL courses. Through the DLL courses, I have had the opportunity to implement the COVA model when creating my ePortfolio and other various projects. I get the opportunity to create something that adequately represents my authentic learning experiences.

The COVA model does appeal to me in several ways. As a teacher, I often fall guilty of losing sight of the importance of providing my students with authentic learning opportunities because of the various things that I am required to do by the state. I, frequently, will attempt to implement play or project-based learning opportunities in the classroom. I am a tactile learner and learn by doing so I often find myself implementing that learning style in the classroom. With the COVA approach, students guide their learning while becoming the facilitator which is a role I have always struggled with (just my fixed mindset coming into play). It is sometimes challenging to let students take the reins, but I have learned that if it is modeled enough, students can become capable if they are allowed room to grow. I have come to understand that I need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable to grow and learn new things. With recently learning about the COVA model, I have begun discussing with my colleagues how we could implement this approach to help gear towards more authentic learning experiences and move away from the traditional teaching and learning styles.

I think that the choice, ownership, and authenticity of the model is beneficial. I struggle a lot with the voice aspect. I have always had a difficult time voicing my thoughts or opinions are various topics just because I can be timid at times. Having a choice in learning and owning it, I think, helps to create more of the authentic learning experiences where I have become more comfortable with my voice. The COVA eBook that I read the last course has been a great resource. Also, exploring the thoughts of peers and professors has been great too. By implementing the COVA model, I think it can help develop a sense of learner agency by giving the students a voice in their learning experiences that is most beneficial to them.
